Prayers of Penitence
The sacrifice of God is a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite
heart God will not despise.
Let us come to the Lord, who is full of
compassion,
and acknowledge our transgressions in penitence and
faith.
AllLord God,
we have sinned against you;
we have done evil in
your sight.
We are sorry and repent.
Have mercy on us according to your
love.
Wash away our wrongdoing and cleanse us from our sin.
Renew a right
spirit within us
and restore to us the joy of your salvation;
through
Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
May the Father of all mercies
cleanse you from
your sins,
and restore you in his image
to the praise and
glory of his name,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
AllAmen.
Collect
Almighty God,
you show to those who are in error the light of
your truth,
that they may return to the way of righteousness:
grant to all
those who are admitted
into the fellowship of Christ’s religion,
that they
may reject those things
that are contrary to their profession,
and follow
all such things as are agreeable to the same;
through our Lord Jesus
Christ,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy
Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
AllAmen.
Gloria in Excelsis
AllGlory to God in the highest,
and peace to his people on
earth.
Lord God, heavenly King,
almighty God and Father,
we worship
you, we give you thanks,
we praise you for your
glory.
Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father,
Lord God, Lamb of
God,
you take away the sin of the world:
have mercy on us;
you are
seated at the right hand of the Father:
receive our
prayer.
For you alone are the Holy One,
you alone are the Lord,
you
alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ,
with the Holy Spirit,
in the glory
of God the Father.
Amen.
Kyrie Eleison
Lord, have mercy.
AllLord, have mercy.

The Liturgy of the Word
Reading
Genesis 15.1-12,17-18
1The word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, ‘Do not be
afraid, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.’ 2But Abram
said, ‘O Lord GOD, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir
of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?’ 3And Abram said, ‘You have given me no
offspring, and so a slave born in my house is to be my heir.’ 4But the word of
the LORD came to him, ‘This man shall not be your heir; no one but your very own
issue shall be your heir.’ 5He brought him outside and said, ‘Look towards
heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them.’ Then he said to him,
‘So shall your descendants be.’ 6And he believed the LORD; and the LORD reckoned
it to him as righteousness.
7Then he said to him, ‘I am the LORD who brought you from Ur of
the Chaldeans, to give you this land to possess.’ 8But he said, ‘O Lord GOD, how
am I to know that I shall possess it?’ 9He said to him, ‘Bring me a heifer three
years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtle-dove,
and a young pigeon.’ 10He brought him all these and cut them in two, laying each
half over against the other; but he did not cut the birds in two. 11And when
birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them
away.
12As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram, and a
deep and terrifying darkness descended upon him.
17When the sun had gone down and it was dark, a smoking fire-pot
and a flaming torch passed between these pieces. 18On that day the LORD made a
covenant with Abram, saying, ‘To your descendants I give this land, from the
river of Egypt to the great river, the river
Euphrates.’
Psalm
Psalm 27
Refrain: The Lord is my light and my
salvation.
1The Lord is my light and my salvation;
whom then shall I fear?
?
The Lord is the strength of my life;
of whom then shall I be
afraid?
2When the wicked, even my enemies and my foes,
came upon me to
eat up my flesh, ?
they stumbled and fell.
3Though a host encamp against me,
my heart shall not be afraid,
?
and though there rise up war against me,
yet will I put my
trust in him.
4One thing have I asked of the Lord
and that alone I seek;
?
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my
life,
5To behold the fair beauty of the Lord ?
and to seek his will in his temple.
6For in the day of trouble
he shall hide me in his shelter;
?
in the secret place of his dwelling shall he hide me
and set me
high upon a rock.
7And now shall he lift up my head ?
above my enemies round about me;
8Therefore will I offer in his dwelling an oblation
with great
gladness; ?
I will sing and make music to the Lord. R
9Hear my voice, O Lord, when I call; ?
have mercy upon me and answer me.
10My heart tells of your word, ‘Seek my face.’ ?
Your face, Lord, will I seek.
11Hide not your face from me, ?
nor cast your servant away in
displeasure.
12You have been my helper; ?
leave me not, neither forsake me, O God of my
salvation.
13Though my father and my mother forsake me, ?
the Lord will take me up.
14Teach me your way, O Lord; ?
lead me on a level path,
because of those who lie in wait for
me.
15Deliver me not into the will of my adversaries,
?
for false witnesses have risen up against me,
and those who
breathe out violence.
16I believe that I shall see the goodness of the Lord
?
in the land of the living.
17Wait for the Lord;
be strong and he shall comfort your heart;
?
wait patiently for the Lord.
Refrain: The Lord is my light and my
salvation.
God, our light and our salvation,
illuminate our lives,
that
we may see your goodness in the land of the living,
and, looking on your
beauty,
may be changed into the likeness of Jesus Christ our
Lord.

Reading
Luke 13.31-35
31At that very hour some Pharisees came and said to him, ‘Get away
from here, for Herod wants to kill you.’ 32He said to them, ‘Go and tell that
fox for me, “Listen, I am casting out demons and performing cures today and
tomorrow, and on the third day I finish my work. 33Yet today, tomorrow, and the
next day I must be on my way, because it is impossible for a prophet to be
killed away from Jerusalem.” 34Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the
prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather
your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were
not willing! 35See, your house is left to you. And I tell you, you will not see
me until the time comes when you say, “Blessed is the one who comes in the name
of the Lord.”’
Sermon
Well we are now into our second week of Lent, I wonder how well we
are all doing with our Lent vows? Mine was to give up coffee and also a little
of my time to help others. The first part I admit is hard as I am a coffee
drinker and like to have a cup when working late, however I have managed without
it thus far. The second part giving up a little of my spare time to help others.
This Is I must admit going well, the way I help others is to be there for them.
Giving up time for others can include friends family and loved ones as well as
those in the community. I do also spend a lot of time in the internet emailing
others and just letting others know that I am here for them. Jesus also gave up his time for us when
he went into the Desert. He gave this up in preparation for his return to us and
his return to his work so that he would be better prepared. Lent today is not
just about giving up a favorite food, but is about us trying to overcome some of
our faults because some believe it was mans sin that led to the death of
Jesus.
During my sermons I always try to include some of what happens in
the community, I was horrified this week to learn that an elderly couple were
burgled in their own home while they watched the TV. In today’s society we must
all learn to be more vigilant and to look out for one another, here is a
thought. How would these people feel when they themselves are old and someone
breaks into there homes and steals from them? If only some of these could see
the hurt that they cause to others. Please think on
this.
The devotional for the day
Thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the Most High,
thy habitation." Psalm
91:9
The Israelites in the wilderness were continually exposed to
change. Whenever the pillar stayed its motion, the tents were pitched; but
tomorrow, ere the morning sun had risen, the trumpet sounded, the ark was in
motion, and the fiery, cloudy pillar was leading the way through the narrow
defiles of the mountain, up the hillside, or along the arid waste of the
wilderness. They had scarcely time to rest a little before they heard the sound
of "Away! this is not your rest; you must still be onward journeying towards
Canaan!" They were never long in one place. Even wells and palm trees could not
detain them. Yet they had an abiding home in their God, His cloudy pillar was
their roof-tree, and its flame by night their household fire. They must go
onward from place to place, continually changing, never having time to settle,
and to say, "Now we are secure; in this place we shall dwell." "Yet," says
Moses, "though we are always changing, Lord, thou hast been our dwelling-place
throughout all generations." The Christian knows no change with regard to God.
He may be rich today and poor tomorrow; he may be sickly today and well
tomorrow; he may be in happiness today, tomorrow he may be distressed—but there
is no change with regard to his relationship to God. If He loved me yesterday,
He loves me today. My unmoving mansion of rest is my blessed Lord. Let prospects
be blighted; let hopes be blasted; let joy be withered; let mildews destroy
everything; I have lost nothing of what I have in God. He is "my strong
habitation whereunto I can continually resort." I am a pilgrim in the world, but
at home in my God. In the earth I wander, but in God I dwell in a quiet
habitation.
—Morning and Evening
The Creed
We
believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We
believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally
begotten of the Father,
God from God, light from light,
true God from
true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father;
through
him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from
heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary
and became
truly human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he
suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in
accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at
the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the
living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We
believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from
the Father [and the Son],
who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and
glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy
catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the
forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the
life of the world to come. Amen
